Keep Your Computer Clean

Keeping your computer clean can be a very important step in avoiding overheating. dust and other debris can build up inside your computer, especially around vents and fans. Compressed air is a wonderful tool that allows you to clean vents, fans, your keyboard, and other components of your computer. Reducing dust in your workspace and avoiding things like eating and dropping crumbs on your computer can also help.

Reduce Strain

There are various things that can overburden your computer and lead to overheating hardware. Having too many programs open or even neglecting to regularly update software and your operating system can lead to the system overloading and creating a hotter environment. The higher the CPU usage, the more likely you are to experience overheating with your device.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

This one may seem a bit obvious, however, it needs to be stated. Putting your device in direct sunlight will instantly create a hotter environment for your device, this includes things like leaving your phone on your dash. We recommend choosing shaded and cool environments that can help your computer stay at an optimal temperature while working.

Monitor Computer Temperature

There are various tools that can actually help to monitor the temperature within your computer.  some of them can even alert you when your computer is running too hot and help you to take action before damage may occur.  Some computers, such as gaming computers come with these tools preinstalled however there are many options you can find if you do not find any already installed on your device.

Check Fan Functionality

If the fans in your computer aren't running properly overheating is bound to occur.  Noisy or slow fans should be replaced as soon as possible to reduce the risk of any problems.  Higher-quality fans can also be installed in your device to improve cooling further if you consistently experience problems. At Chipheads Computer Repair we can replace fans and other hardware if it seems too daunting to do on your own.

Properly Ventilate Your Computer

As mentioned above, every computer comes with vents that allow for cooling and airflow.  We often find that people will block these vents accidentally by doing things like lying in bed or on a couch. You should use your computer on a flat, hard surface. They make lap desks/cooling pads with holes that can help to achieve this even while lying down. For desktop computers, make sure you place it in a well-ventilated area and avoid placing it inside of closed furniture or in spaces where air cannot flow properly.
